  • 5. Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Tokyo)

Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Fine Wind, Clear Morning

In the early morning at the start of autumn, Mt. Fuji is resplendently bathed in red. Red passionately conveys the significance of the dawn of a new day. As the night subsides, cirro-cumulus clouds spread across the sky. The peak is still dark to show that night’s hold is fading, and the mountain’s center rises are hit with the light of a clear day. The bold depictions and faint use of color makes a compelling impression on the viewer, and a single look is enough to understand what it was about this picture’s emotional resonance that fascinated Western impressionists. Engraved by Torao Ishii, printed by Keizaburo Matsuzaki
